Once homes

And as a final post before I hit the road (or really, the train) ... Want to know what a Bombay turning into a Shanghai does to some Bombayites? Here are some photographs.

Sriram,

I don't understand your comment. Please explain more clearly what you are trying to say.

From a brief trip to Shanghai , my own feeling is that Mumbai can become Shanghai, nor artifically throttle the vibrant immigrants who have contributed so much to it ( good and bad) in attempts to do so. "Normal" Chinese are not allowed into the Special Economic zone: even taxis get a special permit to ply there. Do we want such a Mumbai is the q to ask, not whehter we can get it. Why cant we invent an identity of our own? One which does not call for hacking off parts of ourselves, beginning from a conscience?

Whoops .. "Mumbai can neither becom Shanghai, nor should it try to!" is the actual idea!

hmm.. interesting pictures.. i feel that "imposing" change in bombay is never going to work. the people here are smart enough to adapt to any situation. the slum demolitons seem only to be attention grabbing ( or rather attention "diverting") actions by the powers that be..
i dunno which demolished slum... stayed DEMOLISHED... in the last 6 months. they all come back again. its just what the people living there would call a "traas"...
