Thanks Dilip. Excellent article. Can the administration do something to prevent this kinda breakdown ? Reading Maximum City, it seems like we have the sewage system that the British have left us with. Time to overhaul and rebuild ? What do you tink, Dilip ?

Dilip, the rediff article is the first one i actually agree with.

Chappan, Enough with the British already! I've had enough of people who seem to say that India would be like Somalia if it weren't for the great, benevolent British.

Chappan,

I dont think u need to read Maximum City to know that the sewer system is from the British times.

On that note, I have noticed in recent times, that a lot of people build their knowledge of Bombay from reading Maximum City. As much as that book is really well written, there are more than a few occasions, where Suketu misses the point. Having lived in Bombay for 26 years before moving here, and even then, visiting every two years, i realize, that Suketu's is a more outsider view of Bombay than one inside.

And Vijay....touche, why u jumping on chappan for mentioning the name british?

This can be a topic for a massive blog, but i firmly believe that the British left a lot of good legacies. Dont get me wrong, they should not have been there in the first place at all, but they did leave a few good legacies....the english language, railways, public works etc....more on that when i write a blog about it

Hi Dilip,

Read your article, and agree with you. I have my own account of the thing that struck us at http://zombieworld.blogspot.com/
I am a so called townie, live, work and beer in South Bombay, and have recently moved here. Not exactly a co-incidence with the comments posted here, but you'd find the title of my post amusing!

Good show with your blog, just finished adding your feed to my RSSReader.

Best,
Rahul

I never mentioned the benovelence of the British or for that matter any reference to their greatness. All I wanted was someone to corroborate that what Suketu Mehta has detailed is indeed the case. Its been 15 years since I've lived in Bombay and hence dont know the existing infrastrure very well. Does the infrastructure need upgrading desperately was basically the gist of my question.
Why do ppl get all edgy and jumpy with any passing refrence to the British ? Geez, relax a little.

If IAS officers were not corrupt and had not stolen money meant for building drains, this wouldn't have happened. We also know that one J.B.D'Souza was the Chief Secretary of Maharashtra and he used his full brain power and couldn't even build gutters. He was truly a LOW IQ INFERIOR MORON.

So Dilip, aren't you going to post more posts about your anatomical hangups?

Hey, why don't you tell all the poor people of Mumbai to live in second-floor or higher of high-rise flats on hills? Surely J.B. D'Souza must have hidden away a few good apartment complexes in these parts?

- Dhanoosh
(Still awaiting Dilip's answers as to why he conspired with his Daddy to demolish the homes of all those poor people just before the Monsoon. Couldn't you have waited until September, Dilip?

Of course, yeah, delete my post like u did before, then plagiarize it under the name "Dhanoosh", then add another post repeating your sexual inadequacies to make it appear that I abused you..)

JOURNALISTIC ETHICS, REDIFF-COLUMNIST STYLE. I'm just a lowly student, not a high-flying international Columnist, but hey, take it from me - worms have better ethics than you, Dilip. Cheers!

The reason he deletes posts is that he plagiarizes stuff from readers' posts and uses them in his article. He routinely plagiarizes ideas from reader feedback. He is a shameless moron. Even his articles are not his, they are his father's. Had his father not been an IAS officer, he would not have got the opportunity to write for Rediff.

The question has to be asked: if I hate Dilip so much, why do I read every article he writes?

Maybe because I actually like what he writes.

hey k 1.25 (PM or inches - take your pick)

The question has to be asked: if I hate Dilip so much, why do I read every article he writes?

Maybe coz there isn’t a bigger phony around than Dilip?

or

Maybe coz Dilip epitomizes mediocrity at it's best?

It's a long list..

tut tut, Dilip, now we know from where you find material for everything you write - I wonder what you did before starting this blog - maybe you plagiarized content from emails nuts sent you abusing you?

arZan and Chappan, Ok. Ok. I read too much into it, but, I have this to justify myself: I wrote that comment just after reading a ToI editorial that said (and I quote), "We'd be worse off, if not for the British." And I take great exception to that!

Sure, a lot of things belong to the British era. Not just in Bombay, but in the rest of India.

Well, these ToI articles have been getting on my nerves, really. I mean, how stupid can one get? ToI will keep surprising us on this point!
