For whom the bell

Three or four different people have quoted one (only one) of these factoids to me over the last couple of days:

In November 1984, the death toll from terrorist attacks in India was about 3000, second to none in the world.

A report last year by the National Counterterrorism Center (NCTC) in Washington concluded that from January 2004 to March 2007, the death toll from terrorist attacks in India was 3674, second only to that in Iraq during the same period.

From February 2002 to April 2002, the death toll from terrorist attacks in India was about 2000, second to none in the world.

From December 1992 to March 1993, the death toll from terrorist attacks in India was about 1500, second to none in the world.

Incidentally, I've yet to find a single report by the NCTC, as mentioned above, that carries the conclusion referred to above. As far as I can tell, the NCTC issues only yearly reports (see their reports). However, it allows you to generate a report for the period concerned via this page, and the resultant table shows that in that period, India did have the second highest death toll. (Not 3674, though, but 3034).

I also found this NCTC report. It's on the incidents of terrorism in 2007, and on page 27 it has a table titled "Deaths by Country in 2007."

According to the table, four countries listed had more than 1000 deaths in 2007: Iraq 13606, Afghanistan 1956, Pakistan 1335, India 1093.
