View point

Your Government at work serving you, bulletin #35618:

The Hindustan Times (June 30 2009) carries an item titled "One wait ends, another begins". It is about various proposed components of the Western Freeway Sealink in Bombay, of which the just-opened Bandra-Worli Sealink is just one.

In particular, it carries a couple of paras about the Haji Ali-Nariman Point Sealink, and they begin with these two sentences.

WHAT IT IS: 10.9-km bridge was supposed to be third and final part of Western Freeway. However, proposal was dropped as it could affect view of proposed mid-sea Shivaji memorial.

Serving you, I said. Don't forget.

Mid sea Shivaji memorial was which dumbf^%k's idea I wanna know - was land any less in Mumbai? Hell! Let him/her make one memorial on top of his house if need be but why meddle with development in a city. Mid sea memorial for what? Why not house it near the shore. Damn!

"ye hai India meri jaan", is the only reply that seems logical to such a foolish proposal.

watever happened to the sea view... after the memorial, we might need a memorial of "the sea as it used to be before such developments"

Non sense!

I wish Shivaji was alive today. He would have certainly roasted these idiots alive for obstructing development by citing stupid reasons like the view of the memorial.

And I think we already have enough in Mumbai named after Shivaji. Better put the statue on some hill overlooking the city, like "Christ, the redeemer". People can not only view it, they shall be able to go to the foot of it and it will not obstruct any development either!

Mayuresh,

Your suggestion would be OK if they allowed any hills to remain as hills. How will the quarrying lobby react ? Builders? Politicians ? That's why they chose the sea.

If they worry about Shivaji, why not look after the historical forts properly?

Some toughts

1. Maha is heading to elections and Congress would not do anything that will hurt its prospect

2.For those of you who complain against Shivaji, identity politics is practiced everywhere in the world with the Sarkozy burqa ban on the extreme end of the scale. Now Marathis will turn around and ask you why not a statue for Shivaji. After he defended the Martahis from marauding Mughals.

You see.. a Shivaji statue is a peaceful way for Marathis to stick it up to the Mughals. After all he was their bete noir.

Now you can ask the rational question why stick it up at all. for which Marathis might give you a rational reply 'Why did the Mughals come after all. Nobody invited them'.

A very logical question but very difficult to answer ..that's why the chattering classes don't like these questions and they choose to engage in their partime of wine, women ( and men to be politically correct), various "arts" etc and admonish those who ask them

Now one can argue that this is all history and we should move on..yes fair enough but a few lads from Mughal stables did visit Bombay on 26/11. So it is a continuing saga.

On that count, I'd blame the travails of the Worli bridge on the Mughals.

Now you can ask the rational question why stick it up their ass at all? For which sodomizers might give you a rational reply 'Why do the Marathis exist at all? Nobody invited them'.

A statue off the shore of 21st Century Bom amounts to sticking it to kings dead for several hundred years? You're serious, I take it?

Why did the Mughals come after all. Nobody invited them'.

Nobody invited plenty of explorers/invaders/journeymen throughout history. They came anyway. We should build statues to "stick it" to every one of them.

a few lads from Mughal stables did visit Bombay on 26/11 ...

Ah. And those they fired on, which stables did they come from? Chandragupta Maurya's, why not?

So here you have it, kiddos: the war between the Mughals and the Mauryas.

And of course, don't even ask what this has to do with roads and sealinks, because the answer is simple: everything.

only bcuz there r many already in mumbai. what will 1 more do that those have not done?

Ugich Konitari,

The Shivaji statue can be put on top of the hills that comprise the Sanjay Gandhi National Park.

Anyways, I am not advocating any Shivaji staue, whether in the sea or on land, my previous comment was meant to be sarcastic. My bad, wrong comment construction on my part!

If we really want something useful, buy weapons for the Mumbai Police with the money that would be spent on the statue. Even 7 months after 26/11, they do not have good weapons!
