Coach poach

It's that time of year again. You know, when the newspapers fill up with full-page ads from coaching class establishments, congratulating themselves on producing rankers in one or the other exam (school-leaving, college entrance, etc). The ads invariably have a long fine-printed list of their students who have made it through the exam.

This year, I finally did something I've always wanted to do: compare the lists from two different establishments to see if any names appear in both.

So: CBSE-PMT 2006 exam. Allen Career Institute of Kota ("PIOUS EFFORTS always come out with PIOUS RESULTS") has a list of its students who got through (Hindustan Times June 6). Aakash Institute of Bombay ("Aakashians Create History") has a similar list of its students who got through (HT June 7).

Poring over just the names in the top 100, we have Sumeet Agarwal (#24), Vanya Narayan (#32), Wamiqur Rehman (#40) and Ashish Agarwal (#79) who are in both lists.

Coaching classes strike me as hard work, even drudgery. (I'd love to be proved wrong). Why would kids sign up for two at a time? How do you attend two at a time?

Or am I missing something?

I know that these coaching class people (which was Brilliant and Agrawal, back in my day) would approach the top rankers in the IIT JEE and pay them to allow their name to be used, whether or not they were actually their students. How likely is it that 7 of the top 10 would be students of both Brilliant and Agrawal?

I think one year, the IIT JEE topper was from neither coaching centre, and refused to let them use his name; both B and A had to be satisfied with second-place onwards. I forget the details and I may be mistaken.

Rahul, I've heard second hand that this years JEE topper didn't attend coaching classes, any way to confirm this? Which is why he doesn't figure in any of the coaching class ads.

I don't know, I haven't been watching... If you know his name and city, it shouldn't be hard to track him down? Or maybe one can approach him via the IITs.

Have not tackled IIT-JEE coaching classes, but have spoken to students mentioned in the piece, and believe there have been court cases against some of the institutes who used the toppers' names without permission.

Annie, I cut and pasted and got the article -- about IAS dudes, right? I'm reading it here.

Rahul, actually I was just thinking out loud as I wrote that! I am thinking of tracking that topper down and have some leads. Let's see. Should be an interesting story.

but what about the children who are from poor background not necessarily economical but may be academical!!!!
coahing are a sort of guide for them but frauds from coaching is highly condemnable.

Timely post. I saw this news in Indian express today:
http://cities.expressindia.com/fullstory.php?newsid=206575

"Coaching centres and technical training institutes will no longer be able to demand the entire course fees in advance, a ruling by the Delhi Consumer Forum has said."

About the multiple coaching classes boasting on the same names. Usually the institutes offer a variety of courses/tests in different price range. So a student can subscribe to classroom coaching by brilliant, test series by agarwal, postal coaching by apex, and appear for one time tests conducted by FIITJEE. If he is successful, his name will appear in all of their ads.

so u shudnt presume anything.

You mean, I shudn't presume that perhaps you shud have taken coaching from Brilliant and Agarwal and Bansal's too, so you cud figure in their lists as well?

I don't know, old chum, but it seems to me like your comment above only reinforces the point of this post. Thank you.
