A couple of phone calls

How is your country run, you want to know? Is it via Parliament, or in various Cabinets, or do the courts sometimes issue directions, or are the bureaucrats involved in some way?

Well, sometimes things happen over the phone. Read on.
"The TADA court refused Sanjay [Dutt] bail. Just about then, the Supreme Court upheld the validity of TADA and suggested review committees to ensure that the law was not misused against the accused. The committees were to study each case and submit recommendations to the government every six months.

Once, I was having dinner with Shiv Sena chief Balasaheb Thackeray ... Thackeray asked whether there was any way for Sanjay to get bail. I told him the state government hadn't yet set up the review committee. He immediately called up the then chief minister, Manohar Joshi, asking him to form the committee within 24 hours. ...

Then Thackeray, in my presence, called up then Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao and suggested that [a central review] committee be set up. Accordingly, it was done."
That's Satish Maneshinde, lawyer for Sanjay Dutt in the bomb blast trial, in an interview with the Hindustan Times, July 31 2007.

oh is it, I was thinking it was the remote control, quite literally. Now I know the telephone network is the layer on which the remote control works.

Dilip:
There are weak-links in this democracy of ours (I am one of those weak-links, I admit).
If this would have happened to me, I would be telling my grandson someday: "You know, I was in serious trouble and then I went to him for help. The great man just smiled, picked up his phone, made a couple of phone calls, and I was home !" and my grandson would look in awe. The tale sounds so different from the other side of the fence, no ?
The beast is of our making...and now we are too weak to slay it..

Anon 132: "Mood"? What's mood gotta do with it? I'm certainly not surprised.

Sridhar: too weak indeed. How right you are. How sadly right.

To try and create a 'brighter' side of this bleak picture, it suggests that it would help to involve a couple of celebrities in every major investigation from now on... maybe a few hundred innocents benefited from the working of this review panel that was so expressly formed to protect the interests of so few.
